Sturdy Black Dress

My hand-crafted, little black dress for $8.99 from Goodwill was so well made, I just learned I've been wearing it INSIDE OUT for over six months since purchase! Call me a fool but the only words I’ve received while wearing that dress were compliments.

It took Little Pie, while zipping up the back this morning, to discover this fact. Tell me folks, can you buy something of THIS quality, so nice you can't tell inside from out, for $8.99 at a mall? Don't think so.

Now get to the thrift store and find your item of exquisite quality. It’s there. I’ll race you!

Yah, it really is. I really did this. Nobody, not even my friends noticed and they even touched the dress, it's a fabulous fabric!

Okay, admittedly, we have found some wonderful things thrifting, but when it comes to adult or junior clothing it has been dismal. Do you think it is a size thing, a geographic thing, user-error! LOL help, I want to be you!

Denise,

What's your market?

Leave flyers on the doors of the wealthy side of town telling them to donate NOW! Tell 'em it's a tax write off!

LOL. That might be the problem, there is more of a "block" than "side" with wealthy. Hmmm.

Knock down those doors Denise! Tell 'em it's donation or tarnation time they get to choose.

Cute story, Ms. G.

We don't have a thrift store in town that sells much clothing--my favorite consignment shop mostly sells housewares. I've found some fantastic things there, though. However, if I go over the hill to Burlingame, a much wealthier community, I can visit my favorite Goodwill store in the whole Bay Area. You wouldn't believe the awesome stuff I've found there: Elie Tahari, Christopher Blue, you name it.

Denise, is there a nearby town or city that has a wealthy "side"? It might be worth the drive. :)

Elizabeth is right. A planned drive to another place with more thrift is worth it. Just google out your maps and plan your thrifting route.

I know people who don't bat an eye about driving 30 miles to go shopping or 100 miles, once a month to shop for new items. If you thrift, don't worry about those miles, you'll save $$ to cover the gas and your carbon savings in shopping thrift will offset the burning of the gas.

I know Burlingame, wouldn't mind shoveling through some Goodwill's there! Hop the Bart and try Berkley and lemme know what you find. Oh, oh! Try Marin County! Google for thrift stores. You are in a market I'd love to learn!

Although I must say that I've thrifted in Aspen and Telluride and - yikes the prices. But alas, these were consignment shops. But the cowgirl boots were worth a possible trip to jail! Okay, well maybe not jail. But they were very, very cool. Probably Sundance, and who cannot love what Redford loves?

True, it is totally all about location. In my hometown, I wouldn't even bother walking into the door of a thrift store. Where I live now, the pickings are so good it actually saddens me.

Well we all know there is treasure to be found nearly everywhere. Perhaps this country not only needs a National Thrift Store Month but a Clean Out Your Closet and Donate day!

My mission, should I decide to accept it... ;) I'll let you know if I have the chance to do a G'will run in Berkeley.

Speaking of the East Bay, I have to put in a plug for the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. Oh. My. God. Fabric remnants and samples, yarn, rubber stamps, tins, buttons, film canisters... it's a mecca for teachers and artists. The prices are astoundingly low. They even just sent out an e-mail announcment saying they had a couple of floor looms available for $500 each. Love love love them.

Great story about the dress. Reminds me of the stories about abstract art hung upside down and no one noticing it. Golightly is starting a new trend: the inside out look.

Sometimes I find an awesome dress for $18 or so at a non-thrift store and go HA! Shopping Golightly did not find this amazing dress for this cheap then I read this and grumble my way back to the challenge. Nice find!

Alan,

Your comment reminds me of this painting my friend has of this beautiful, single pear. When she first brought it home there was some debate as to how it show be hung. One person insisted on one way which, made it not look like a pear.

That dress looks so versatile, like I could wear it anywhere and feel comfortable. Another comfortable yet chic style is the Marc Jacobs Stretch Wool dress that I'm in love with. Check it out at AskMelissa.com

I love it!

My two sturdy black dresses came from our local Goodwill.

They are almost identical except the summer weight dress has a piece of silver hardware at the neck.

Both dresses can go from casual to a night on the town with a simple change of accessories.

Good quality fabric that's wash and wear for $4.99 each. :)

I've had them for several years and wear them at LEAST once a week. :)
